2019 in 10 Costa Moments – A Recap of the Year
2019 is coming to an end and oh what a year it has been! From fundraising events to festive drinks, serving coffee from vintage buses to the launch of our brand-new app, these past 12 months have been jam-packed with fun and cheer, all in true Costa spirit.
With 2020 just around the corner, here’s a little recap of the past 12 months to take you on a short and sweet trip down memory lane.
1) The One with the Friends Quiz
Our year began with a Friends-themed quiz night held at our outlet in Mriehel. The event brought together lovers of the popular American television series, Friends. From guessing who ate Ross’ favourite thanksgiving sandwich to singing along to Phoebe’s peculiar yet catchy songs, the quiz was a great success! All participants had a blast and so did we!
2) Figolla Drink Takes on Poland
April saw one of our best baristas, Jelka Antunovic, clinch the title of ‘Barista of the Year 2019’ with her winning concoction, the ‘Figolla Drink’. In May, Jelka went on to represent Malta in Poland for the Barista of the Year Champions of Champions. Not only did she perform superbly on the day but she was also awarded the ‘Facebook and Audience Award’. (best social media support.) Well done Jelka!
“Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that this job would become such an adventure." – Jelka Antunovic
3) Frostinos for the Win
Summer tastes so much better with a Frostino in-hand and Summer 2019 was no exception. The full range of Frostinos made their debut at the Frostino party at our Marsaxlokk outlet. This event allowed customers the opportunity to be the first to taste this brand-new flavour before it was launched in any other store.
4) Free Coffee, Anyone?
Come June, Costa was busy brewing up some creative ideas to usher in the summer months. We kicked off the hottest season of the year with a fun summer commercial where we delighted passers-by with free Costa drinks!
The highlight of this month, however, was definitely the Costa Coffee Bus Invasion in collaboration with the Bongu Bus with DanuSan. Our super baristas swapped their usual coffee counters for a more unusual setting – a vintage bus. Local television presenters, Chrysander and Daniel from DanuSan, filmed their popular radio show whilst touring the island on an old vintage bus. Costa got on board by serving fresh coffee directly from the four-wheeler as well as handed out free coffee and iced drinks to everyone in the vicinity.
5) Drink Coffee, Earn Points. Simple.
Summer may have drawn to an end, but the best was yet to come. In October, Costa celebrated International Coffee Day with the launch of the much-anticipated loyalty app – the Costa Club Malta app. Now Costa lovers get rewarded when collecting points with every purchase. These can be exchanged for more costa products of your choice. Haven’t checked it out yet? Head to the App Store or Google Play and download the free Costa Club Malta app today.
6) Christmas Kick-Off
What’s Christmas without fancy new Costa drinks and festive-themed cups? November saw the launch of six new flavours. These were Macaroon White Hot Chocolate, Caramel Hot Chocolate, Black Forest Hot chocolate, Irish Style Latte, Gingerbread Latte, Hot Winter Lemonade. What can we say? Our customers loved them a latte!
7) The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
December was packed with all sorts of fun and meaningful activities.
In the first week, Kelma Kelma and Ghaqda Maltija organized a Maltese themed quiz night at Costa The event was held in aid of Inspire Foundation Malta, an NGO which provides a range of services to individuals with a disability. From questions about traditional local recipes to Maltese idioms, the event put true patriots to the test. A large sum of money was collected for the charity, making the event a great success.
8) An important Message
Whilst Christmas is a time for festive cheer, many of us know that it’s not always the case for everyone. Some people find it to be the hardest and loneliest time of the year. Costa teamed up with Willingness Team and distributed four differently designed coasters to all its stores. Each coaster displayed a question to help raise awareness on mental health issues, especially during the holiday season.
9) Wake Up and Smell The Coffee
Last but not least, 13th of December saw the launch of our much-anticipated Costa Christmas advert. This video passed on a meaningful message to viewers, telling them to cherish their loved ones now, before it’s too late. The video received an overwhelming response from all our wonderful customers.
10) Giving Back
There was no better way to end the year than by giving back to the Maltese community. We headed to L-Istrina with our Costa Cart to reward the hardworking staff and guests with some refreshing coffee and Costa treats.
That’s a wrap!
With 2019 being such a success, 2020 has big shoes to fill! We plan on making it bigger and better!
Expect more events, crazy flavours, new ideas and who knows? Perhaps new stores.
Whether it’s studying, working or catching up with friends, we aim to fill you with special Costa moments that you will cherish forever.
Wishing you all the best this festive season.
Love from the Costa Team x
