GOODBYE Plastic Straws, HELLO BIO-PLAST!
Here at Costa we love the world we live in and we know you do too. So we want to do everything we can to make sure it’s in good shape, not just for today, but for all our tomorrows too.
So we’d like to share the great news with you that we are no longer using plastic straws at any of our twelve stores in Malta. Why? Well, we want to cut right down on our use of single-use plastic because we don’t want to do anything that may contribute to global warming or present a threat to our beautiful marine wildlife.
But, you may be asking yourself, what about my Salted Caramel Frostino? Won’t I still be able to enjoy it, or any of my other favourites, through a straw?
Well, the great news is that yes, absolutely, you will be able to. Because we are very excited to be able to tell you that, here at Costa Malta, we are now using alternative eco-friendly straws made of a ‘green’ material called BIO-PLAST.
BIO-PLAST is a thermoplastic material that contains a high proportion of biologically-sourced raw materials. Our new BIO-PLAST straws are also completely biodegradable and can even be composted. Made in Germany and fully eco-certified, you can be sure that our new BIO-PLAST straws are eco-friendly from beginning to end.
We’ve also made another big change to the way we do things here at Costa Malta which, we think, together with our new BIOPLAST straws, will go a long way to cutting the amount of avoidable plastic waste we generate. Because we’ve stopped putting straws in our customer condiment units, and instead they are only available with certain drinks, or by asking one of our friendly Baristas for one.
We estimate that by making these changes here at Costa, we will be saving the environment between 350,000 and 400,000 single-use plastic straws every year. That’s huge! We’re really pleased, and we hope you are too.
We’re also exploring other ways to reduce our use of single-use plastic. Although, as we’re part of a franchise, we hope you appreciate that making big changes can sometimes take a little time.
